Is it just me or has there been a rapid increase in frenzied fitness freaks over the past few years? Don’t get me wrong, being healthy is a wonderful quality and we should all try our utmost best to have a balanced diet and exercise when we can.
Realistically there has probably always been a fair share of sexualisation within the world of fitness if you think about it, but I just feel like it’s getting out of control now. Physical appearance is an important attribute, but is it the most important? Absolutely fucking not! I’ve discussed this topic with so many people including my family and friends and rarely does anyone agree with me, but I really couldn’t care less. It honestly breaks my heart to know that we live in a world where almost everyone is so absorbed in how their bodies look. It’s practically obsessive. See

Social media just makes it a whole lot worse. Almost every time I take a look at my Instagram feed I am guaranteed to see a picture of a topless guy pulling his boxers down in order to show off his chiseled abs or a girl in yoga pants/shorts sticking her bum out as far as she possibly can. Why has this now become a social norm? It’s borderline soft-porn. The icing on the cake is when they sometimes have captions involving a deep and motivational quote about working hard or having ‘haters’.

Regardless of any captions, of course everyone is entitled to take selfies and we all have our days where we feel more attractive than usual – heck, I know I’m guilty of this! It’s great to celebrate your personal confidence in how you look, but it’s beyond irritating to see constant attempts to disguise narcissism with (supposedly) ‘striving’ to become a better person.
Maybe this is easy for me to say because I’m quite confident, but it’s taken me a very long time to accept myself (flaws and all) and not get immersed into the spiral of what is deemed as ‘sexy’ which we are all surrounded by each and every day. More.
If you disagree with what I have written in this article, then you probably hate me right now, but this is an incredibly important subject to me, which is also very relevant to our generation. I can’t get my head around this bandwagon that almost everyone is deciding to jump on and I’ve been close to questioning myself as to why I haven’t. I am constantly trying to better myself, but my priorities don’t lie with my physique. I have plenty of goals and ambitions, trust me, they just aren’t physical and not everyone will know about them. If you feel that ‘fitness’ is important to you, then why not let the results speak for themselves? Not everything has to be flaunted online – it’s distasteful and reeks of desperation as well as clearly showing how unhappy you are with yourself.
