“Get a room.”
PDA (or Public Displays of Affection) is bearable to an extent. Maybe some minor hand holding, a quick peck on the lips, some light back or arm stroking. Whatever. I just don’t want to see you shoving your tongue down each other’s throats, dry humping and doing everything short of sex in public. We’ve all seen it. We’d all like to forget it.
The thought brings me back to my school days. I may have PTSD disorder (or PDA disorder) after suffering through a couple who would lie on top of each other at lunch and instead of eating their food, they’d eat each other’s faces. The sound of wet lips smacking against each other was the soundtrack to my daily lunch until finally I couldn’t take it anymore and found a new place on the grass, as far away from them as possible. Everyone knows this couple and everyone wants this couple to stop.
You’d think that this level of PDA would end with adults but it doesn’t, adults also partake in public heavy make out sessions. I mean, it’s great you want to show off your love for each other but could you do it preferably somewhere away from me? And when you are making out in front of me, what do I do? Do I pretend to not notice, do I smile awkwardly at you, do I join in? Then that would really be an awkward situation!
In all seriousness, I would rather see an act of love than an act of hate. And, of course, it’s not hurting anyone but might make others uncomfortable. So keep it short and sweet, or get a room!
“It’s two people kissing, so what?”
PDA can be pretty divisive, the marmite of the relationship world. I can see why people hate them, but not me, I love them.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking full on dry humping in public, no one wants to see that, but I’m a big fan of kissing my girlfriend in public. And I love the fact that, even though she hates it, she lets it happen. My main argument for PDA is, why not? To me it falls under the category of if you’re not hurting anyone, or offending anyone within reason, then what’s the issue? No one’s forcing you to look, and even if you are, it’s two people kissing, so what? I’m sure you’ll live!
When I say not offending anyone within reason, I mean that due to the sheer volume of people on this planet, everything will offend someone. But when it’s something as simple as kissing my girlfriend in public and you’re offended that’s your issue… not mine. If I’m spouting hate speech or inciting violence (not that I ever would!), and you take offence then that’s my fault. But tough if I’m in love (which I am) and want to show it (which I do) and you’re offended. As Sean Bateman would say, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll, deal with it’.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand why some people may hate it. Before I met my girlfriend, I was single for a long time and was not a fan of PDA. But for me, it was out of jealousy because I wanted that. I think that’s why now that I’m on the other side, I’m so keen on public displays. I’ve been on the outside looking in for so long, now I’m on the inside I’m milking it for all it’s worth.
