Dealing With Rumours
I never knew just how hurtful rumours could be until it was me in the situation, lying on my bed, face down, my eyes stinging from crying so much. I didn’t feel like anybody liked me anymore… well how would I know? Females can be so bitter and two-faced nowadays. Some people will do anything to turn others against you – either because of pure jealousy or because they have insecurities themselves. Personally, I think the experience of having to deal with rumours has made me a more careful, confident person in general, and this was completely down to kind words from my parents. I’ve learnt a few special tips to help when dealing with harsh, untrue rumours, check them out:
1. True Friends Will Be There
One good thing that comes out of rumours being spread is finding out who your true friends are. For example, if there’s a rumour going around that you apparently called your ex’s new girlfriend an extremely inappropriate name, when you’re one of the most polite, helpful people in society, your true friends would know you well enough to not just believe what they have been told. When it was me in this situation, I found a group of people who I never thought liked me that much actually stood up for me, more than my so called ‘friends’ did. So if anyone approaches you about a horrid, untrue rumour going around, simply don’t overreact with the old “You’re such a bitch”. Instead, calmly and casually reply with ‘My true friends will believe the truth, if you knew me that well you’d know I’d never do that’. This will show your level of maturity as well as the fact you don’t care about what they say about you.
2. Focus On The Future
Although you may be feeling extremely depressed from rumours going around, you need to try your best to focus on the good things in life. Just think, this time next year, all of these rumours will probably be over, and you’ll be facing new tasks and challenges (challenges aren’t always bad as I mentioned, they help you grow stronger as a person). When I felt really down over rumours, I just thought to myself “this time next year I will be in college, and will settle in a whole new group of people, doing something I love. Not too long”. This kind of thinking really helps as it keeps you motivated for your future.
3. Deactivating Social Media
Usually, I’d say don’t let the bullies/rumour spreaders win, but if they are making your life a misery by constantly uploading statuses about you or messaging you horrid things, it’s probably best you take a break from social media. It may seem like a hard thing to stick to, but when I deleted all my social networks I felt so much happier – like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. You can do the same! It doesn’t mean leaving it forever – maybe just create another account a while later and only accept the people you know well and like. There are many people who just add you to stalk you, so be wise when accepting requests.
