When I was told that I was going to be spending my Valentine’s Day at the cinema watching Deadpool, I wasn’t best pleased. It’s not that I had anything against the idea of going to see it but to me, it just seemed like another Marvel film in a long line of Marvel films. I think Marvel heroes and the ideas behind it all are great but what started as a few films about superheroes has turned into this mega franchise with all the films intertwining and to be honest, I find it hard to keep up with.
Deadpool is a film about your ‘not-so average superhero.’ It stars Ryan Reynolds as a man who has developed terminal cancer. He is told about a cure for this which goes awry, resulting in him becoming ‘Deadpool’ and looking for revenge. Ryan Reynolds was a brilliant choice for the starring role as he plays the role effortlessly and holds hilarity throughout.
I had heard good things about the film. Actually I had only heard good things but despite this, I was still dubious. However, I had agreed to go and see it and I wasn’t going to change my mind. Within two minutes of the opening credits appearing on the screen, I was in stitches. I was actually thinking to myself, “how is it possible for opening credits to be hilarious?” This left me in good spirit and much more open minded towards the rest of the film than I was at the start.
Not only is it the hilarity of the film that makes it so good but the way in which Reynolds portrays Deadpool and through the use of both action and music. The action in the film could be considered somewhat gory, on a comical level, but is done so in a way that it’s very subtle which is very effective. The choice of music also added to the ‘good feeling’ in the film, by choosing upbeat and catchy songs that make you remember the film.
As the film progressed, it only became more humorous and by the end, all of my friends and I were in stitches and saying how we would quite happily go straight back into the cinema to watch it again, which is unusual.
Overall, I would say to anyone who isn’t into Marvel or superhero films to not let that cloud your judgement and to anyone who is a lover of a good comedy and comical violence, to go and see the film as you will thoroughly enjoy it.
